What is it?

One Number. Everything.

The personnummer is a 12-digit identity number assigned by Skatteverket. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, sign a lease, or access most services.

Registration

How to Register

Registration with Skatteverket is a separate step from getting your residence permit. You must visit in person.

EU citizens need

Passport + proof of employment or studies

Non-EU citizens need

Passport + valid residence permit

Statens Servicecenter (state service office)

Processing time

2–8 weeks after visit

1. Book appointment at Statens Servicecenter
2. Bring passport, permit, and proof of address
3. Fill in form SKV 7632 (moving to Sweden)
4. Submit documents in person
5. Receive personnummer by post in 2–8 weeks

Coordination Number

Staying Under a Year?

If you're in Sweden for less than 12 months, you won't get a personnummer — instead you get a samordningsnummer (coordination number).

Birth day +60 (e.g. born 15th → 75)
