Overview

Banking in Denmark

Denmark is virtually cashless — even market stalls and hot dog carts take cards. You need a Danish bank account with a NemKonto designation to receive your salary, tax refunds, and government benefits. The four major banks are Danske Bank, Nordea, Jyske Bank, and Nykredit.

NemKonto

NemKonto — Your Official Account

NemKonto (Easy Account) is not a special account — it is the designation on one of your existing bank accounts telling the government where to deposit money. Every salary, tax refund, child benefit, and SU payment goes to this account. You must register it within your first month.

Credit & RKI

Credit History & RKI Register

Denmark has no credit score system like the US or UK. Instead, the RKI (Ribers Kredit Information) register is a negative-only list. If you are on it, you cannot get a phone contract, rent an apartment, or take any loan. Staying off RKI is critical for expats building a new life.
